About

Math tutoring with an end in sight

Rajni Rao, founder and tutor, tries to teach herself out of a job.

Rather than covering homework and upcoming tests, each lesson teaches students the foundational math skills and confidence they’ll need to succeed without the continued support of a math tutor. Brave Math is for students who get frustrated by math, have had math tutors before, or are planning to skip a grade of math.

Services

Tailored, one-on-one lessons start where math makes sense for your student, and end when they’re able to independently master new content in math class without the continued support of a math tutor. Brave Math is based in Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. and offers online lessons to reach students everywhere.

Elementary school

Students develop a strong number sense with addition, subtraction, and multiplication. They then apply those skills to factors, long division, fractions, and decimals. We help them master these foundational concepts before middle school.

Middle school

Students prepare for algebra by mastering fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, and more. When these concepts are challenging, we can usually trace the problem back to foundational math concepts as early as multiplication tables.

High school

High school builds on the math foundations taught in elementary and middle school. Students have busy schedules and many goals, so our recommendation will consider how our service and others can best support your student’s needs.

Testimonials

My daughter went into 7th grade with major gaps in her math knowledge. I chose Rajni as a tutor because I liked her approach: identify her math gaps through testing, focus on getting her caught up, and give her the option to stop tutoring. In three months, my daughter was not only caught up, she was doing well on her assessments at school.
— Julia E., Brave Math Parent
My daughter met with Rajni for an hour weekly, she was quickly able to evaluate the pieces that my daughter was missing and struggling with and make a plan to “fill in the blanks.” Eight months later my daughter is much more confident in math as consistently earning good grades.
— Kathleen E., Brave Math Parent
I was grades behind in my math and have been catching up with tremendous speed... I have never once felt judged for my level of math or not grasping a concept quickly enough.
— Adrielle Z., Brave Math Student
